On Purpose: What is Lean culture really about?

The discussion on Lean thinking is often focused on productivity or tools. At its heart, it’s actually about
building a culture where problems are seen as opportunities, and the goal is to create a learning
environment. A Lean culture builds Standard Work for every task – creating a goal of improving the Standard Work as ‘opportunities’ arise.

"The only thing of real importance that leaders do is to create and manage culture"

— Edgar H. Schein, Organisational Culture and Leadership (2010)

Try this:

Paul Akers uses the phrase "What bugs you" Ask any of your team: "Name one small thing that frustrates you that we could fix this week? Capture and celebrate these ideas.

On Process: Seeing your process through the eyes of the customer

It’s easy to get lost in our internal processes — but the only judge of a process is the user of the outputs of that process — the internal or external customer.

When you walk your process from the customer’s perspective, delays, defects, and frustrations become obvious.

"We see our customers as invited guests to a party, and we are the hosts. It's our job every day to make every important aspect of the customer experience a little bit better."

— Jeff Bezos, interview in Inc. Magazine, 1999

On People: Why the foundation of Lean is built on people

No Lean initiative succeeds through management mandates – it lives or dies by the engagement of the people who directly interact with customers or clients.

You can have many signs on the walls but people will take their cue from the behaviours of those around them.

"You get what you tolerate."

— Henry Cloud, Boundaries for Leaders (2013)
